Landstar System promoted two sales leaders to executive roles in its C-suite, mobile announced last week.
Matt Dannegger has been named head of field sales and Jim Applegate has been named head of corporate sales, strategy and specialty merchandise.
“They are an excellent combination of complementary capabilities and I am excited that they will lead our sales efforts going forward,” Landstar President and CEO Frank Lonegro said in the release. “Their collaborative approach to driving growth opens a new chapter of opportunity in Landstar’s successful story.”
The pair will take over the company’s sales function from Rob Brasher, who stepped down last year as vice president and chief commercial officer but agreed to stay on as a special adviser until June.
Dannegger, previously senior EVP of field sales, has been with Landstar for more than 15 years. As head of sales, he will support Landstar’s more than 1,000 independent dealers in their business planning, sales and marketing efforts, implementing new tools and technologies to unlock productivity, the company said.
Sales from independent dealers make up almost all of the carrier’s revenue. During fiscal year 2023, 524 agents generated at least $1 million in revenue each, making up about 95% of Landstar’s consolidated revenue, according to securities deposit. This percentage shrank from 97% the previous year.
Applegate will support Landstar’s corporate sales efforts, strategic growth initiatives, specialty cargo offerings and business development. He joined the company in 2009 and most recently served as EVP of business intelligence and strategy.
“The trucking industry is becoming increasingly complex, and so are the needs of Landstar’s independent dealers and customers,” said Lonegro. “Matt and Jim’s unique sales experience and expertise are a competitive advantage for Landstar, and their partnership with our business team will differentiate Landstar in the dynamic commodity market.”
