Covenant Logistics has hired a Waabi executive as its next COO, the company announced.
Dustin Koehl, head of commercialization for the self-driving truck technology company, will join Covenant effective May 13, the company said.
Koehl, 40, has worked in the trucking industry for more than 17 years, with previous stints at US Xpress and Total Transportation of Mississippi, according to his LinkedIn.
“I believe Dustin’s operational and sales experience, including his 12-year tenure with Total Transportation of Mississippi, will strengthen our leadership team,” Covenant President and CEO David Parker said in the release.
Koehl and the rest of Covenant’s leadership will be charged with advancing business goals, including “continuing to diversify our business into less commoditized niches,” Parker said.
Covenant’s previous COO, Sam Hough, now serves as EVP of Express Operations, according to the company’s website. Koehl will take over some operational duties from Covenant President Paul Bunn to allow Bunn to focus on his role, Bunn said in the release.
“I am excited to work with Dustin and the leadership team to continue executing on our strategic initiatives,” said Bunn.
Koehl was responsible for customer adoption, transport strategy and security at Waabi. He is a fellow with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Freight Laboratory and has served on committees of the American Trucking Association and the American Transportation Research Institute.
Trucking companies and autonomous companies have become more intertwined as each seeks a line of sight to the future of developing technology. Walmart brought on Kodiak Robotics COO James Reed as vice president of transportation development in February and Einride hired a former Volvo executive as its general manager last year.
