Jack Van Steenburg, retired Chief Safety Officer of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, has opened a consulting firm for carriers, lawyers and safety groups, announced on LinkedIn.
Van Steenburg, who left the FMCSA last year, is the lead expert for the company, which he named CMV Consulting Experts.
“I’m here to help lawyers, motor carriers and safety teams with operations review, FMCSR compliance and crash avoidance assessments,” he wrote on his LinkedIn profile.
Van Steenburg, who has 15 years of FMCSA experience, spent the first 25 years of his career as a staff inspector for the New York State Police, according to his LinkedIn.
He led all highway and vehicle safety programs for the New York law enforcement agency before being hired as director of FMCSA’s office of enforcement and compliance in May 2008.
Eventually promoted to executive director, assistant administrator and chief of safety, Van Steenburg was a familiar face to the trucking industry at an agency that has seen plenty of turnover in its leadership ranks.
Several other senior executives have left FMCSA in the past year or so.
Trustee Robin Hutcheson, Deputy Trustee Earl Adams Jr. and Director of External Affairs Kala Wright have stepped down since joining Van Steenburg in San Diego to speak at the American Trucking Associations 2022 Conference & Management Expo.
Interim Deputy Administrator Sue Lawless leads the agency as its top official, Brenna Marron is director of government affairs, and Charles Fromm succeeded Brian Stansbury as chief counsel.
